Birds

It’s a bird’s world.

The park provides habitat for many species of birds. These include year-round and migratory visitors attracted to the park's open prairie, brushy cover, and multiple food sources and nesting sites. Water birds congregate at a neighboring pond overlooked by a bird blind. Bring your binoculars and watch for Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks, Great Blue Herons, American Kestrels, Painted Buntings, Bell’s Vireos, Summer Tanagers, and Scissor-tailed Flycatchers, among many others.

AT THE PARK

Conservation and restoration projects that support native birds include:

  • Prairie preservation protects the endangered habitat of ground-nesting grassland birds like the Field Sparrow and Eastern Meadowlark.

  • Towers provide roosting habitat for Chimney Swifts, a species in steep decline as hollow, dead trees and old chimneys are removed.

  • Brushy shrubs and snags (standing dead trees) provide cover and nesting habitat.

  • Diverse native food sources, including plants and insects, are protected and promoted.

  • Nesting boxes invite Eastern Screech-Owls and Eastern Bluebirds to nest in the park.
